Lovehoney’s Classic Plug-In Massage Wand Vibrator: Review

When I took Lovehoney’s Classic Plug-In Massage Wand vibrator out of its packaging, I was struck by how familiar it was. I knew I’d been here before. And after a quick comb through my toybox, it was clear that I had indeed. I purchased Lovehoney’s Unicorn Massage Wand from its collab with Tokidoki a couple of years ago. Side by side, stripped of Tokidoki’s adorable signature Japanese Kawaii styling, the Tokidoki wand and the Classic Wand are nearly identical. Fortunately, Tokidoki Wand was a solid wand when it was available for sale and so is Lovehoney’s more current Classic Massage Wand.

Why Try a Wand?

If you’re familiar with sex toys at all, you’re probably already familiar with wand-style vibes like Lovehoney’s Classic Massage Wand. For the uninitiated, wands were originally designed as body massagers. Fortunately, many years ago, pervs like me discovered that they doubled as ultra-powerful clit stimulators and here we are. Wand massagers are now the go-to style of vibe for many clit owners the world over. The wand that started it all is the Magic Wand, aka the Hitachi Magic Wand, though Hitachi has transferred ownership to Vibratex. In middle school, I clandestinely watched Sex and the City with the volume all the way down (Mom, why did you put a tv with cable in my room if you didn’t want me to watch it?). I remember a wand being Samantha’s vibrator of choice. And if it was good enough for Samantha, it was good enough for discerning clits everywhere.

Wands’ large vibrating heads provide a broad base of stimulation for those who prefer it over pinpoint vibration. Their powerful motors also make them the vibrator style of choice for those with clits of steel. If wimpier options leave you feeling frustrated rather than blissed-out, the strong, rumbly vibrations of wands are more likely to work for you. Their thuddy vibrations penetrate deeper, stimulating more of the internal clitoral structure than your average vibe.

Styling and Construction

The styling of Lovehoney’s Classic Plug-In Massage Wand is pretty unassuming out of the box. It’s basic black with Lovehoney’s heart-shaped logo located above the dial control. I actually like the black color more than I thought it would. The wand’s black body means it’s less likely to look dingy after a while like the mostly-white body of my Tokidoki Wand. It also avoids the grating gender stereotype issue that plagues many vibrators. Instead of making the Classic wand pink or purple (ya know, for girls– uggh), basic black makes no assumptions about a user’s gender expression.

The Lovehoney Classic Wand VIbrator
The Classic Wand’s scroll wheel control makes it more adjustable than its competitors

My favorite design choice is the scroll wheel control. It a manual dial that switches it from “off,” all the way up to its highest setting. The scroll wheel eliminates my two biggest issues with the Magic Wand, both the Original and the newer versions. My first problem with all of the Magic Wands is that their low settings aren’t that low (although the newer versions have lower settings than the Original). The Lovehoney Classic Wand starts out pretty gentle, allowing the user to slowly ramp up speed if desired. The dial control resolves the issue of the Magic Wand lack of speeds (just two or four, depending on the model) by forgoing preset speeds altogether. You can go from a gentle hum to a rollicking rumble and back again with a spin of the wheel.

Like most wands, this vibrator plugs into the wall for ac power. I found the 6-ft cord adequate for my bedroom set-up but take note of where your outlets are before buying a plug-in wand. The head is made of body-safe silicone- unlike the Original Magic Wand’s porous PVC head. The middle of the main body features a thoughtfully-designed textured surface for a no-slip grip.

Orgasm-ability

This is the part that you’re here for, I’m sure. Who cares if a vibrator is beautifully engineered if its motor is trash. Fortunately, Lovehoney’s Classic Wand more than gets the job done. I like that I can throw on some good porn, turn up for the dial just smidge and tease my clit for as long as I want with the Classic Wand. When I’m ready to come, I spin that dial all the way up to reach a thigh-shaking orgasm in 30 seconds or less.

My only gripe with the Classic Wand is the flexible head. Now some people will see this as a plus and Lovehoney bills it as one. I don’t love it, however. I like to powerfully grind vibrators against my pelvis for maximum pressure against my clit. And so, flexible vibrators are my mortal enemy. The classic Wand isn’t super flexible so I can deal, but it frustrates me a bit. It requires me to apply more force with my wrist than I’d like in order to get the pressure I need. Whether the flexible head works for you, though, comes down to preference.

Even though the Classic Wand isn’t a perfect match for my flexibility preferences, I’m sure that it will get plenty of use just like the Lovehoney Tokidoki Wand before it. The wand’s rumbly vibrations deliver multiple orgasms for me quickly and reliably every time, and that’s what I’m looking for in a vibrator.
